It is no big secret than an awful lot of local musicians and churches buy an awful lot of music accessories, instruments etc., on the internet or from mail order.  Topeka has lost locally owned Reel Music, Dan’s Guitar, Donna Allen’s Keyboard, and Midwestern Music in the last few years.  The reasons for these businesses demise vary, but the lack of local support is certainly a factor in most cases. (Dan’s unfortunate auto accident being the obvious exception.)  Keep in mind everytime you send your Topeka earned dollars off to someplace else more store fronts and more jobs will leave Topeka.  Many individuals, schools, and churches, as a matter of course, and for various reasons,  just don’t support us and other locally owned businesses.

A good reason to support us is we have garnered quite a bit of knowledge that saves you time and or money.

Here are a couple incidents from just this morning.

A person called complaining that the EMG pickups that were internet ordered for their internet ordered guitar didn’t distort despite the description online.  We installed them so we must have screwed up.  Well, no, EMG pickups aren’t distortion boxes. These people could have saved themselves a lot of hassle and money by shopping with us and getting some advice.

Or we have the guy that just called complaining that the speaker cables he had just ordered in didn’t work.  They weren’t wired up, (which might help explain any money savings).  What do we charge to wire them?  And, by the way,  this person was great friends with one of the staff guys here.  Sorry, send the worthless cables back to where ythey were purchased and come in and purchase cables from us that actually work.  If the fellow that works here is really your friend maybe you’d consider doing business with him so he will have a job in the future.

Yeah, that “Buy It Now” is awfully easy, but it makes the day that much sooner in which you will not even have a local option.  That’s the plain truth.

January 16th and 17th the Celtic Fox hosted the annual Jam4Dan fund raiser.  The Steam guys caught as many groups as we could, and enjoyed the local bands one and all.  Thanks to everybody that helped organize and put on the event, (Joel Edison, Tom Crebs, Doug Ruth, Danl Blackwood, Ren Richardson, Mike Fox, Sonny Heller, etc.).  Thumbs up.  Money raised will be used to provide lesson scholarships to aspiring young guitar players.  Check out the Jam4Dan website for information on how to apply.

Free money!  This year $3700.00 is available for guitar and bass lesson scholarships.  Apply!

Congrats to Chip Janda, our main guitar teacher.  In 2009 he taught 1885 lessons here at Steam.  Sharing the love.  If you are interested in upgrading your skills, or know somebody interested in learning,  give Chip a call here at the store @ 267-3771

If your guitar doesn’t have a humidifier in the case get down here and buy one.  Furnaces take moisture out of the air, which takes moisture out of wood, resulting in screwed up guitars.  Fingerboards shrink and fret ends will shred your fingers, bridges pull off of acoustics, necks warp, wood cracks. etc.  and a whole host of problems can and will arise.  Is your guitar a cheapy?  Doesn’t matter.  Have a wonderful expensive instrument?  Doesn’t matter.  Get in and buy a humidifier.  Econo Herco humidifiers run a mere $5.50 and the truly superior ones from Oassis are $20.00.  What are they worth?  Plenty if they save your instrument from turning into the guitar version of  a raisin.
