Jam 4 Dan II / The Dan Falley Memorial Fund

Dan FalleyJam 4 Dan II will be January 18, 2009 at The Celtic Fox in Topeka. Over a dozen of Topeka’s top bands will be featured at the day-long benefit that honors long-time Topeka guitar player and teacher Dan Falley. Falley died in an auto accident Jan. 6, 2007. All proceeds collected will go to music scholarships for guitar and bass students 18 and under taking lessons in Shawnee County.

Scholarships

Trustees* of The Dan Falley Memorial Fund will oversee the awards. Each award will have a cash value of $300, the cost of approximately 20 half-hour lessons. The number of scholarships will be determined by the amount of money collected by the fund by Feb. 1, 2009.

Any guitar/bass student taking lessons in Shawnee County is eligible to apply for a scholarship. The application will consist of three parts, two filled out by the student and a third by the instructor. (Grammar, punctuation, spelling and other components of quality writing will be considered when scoring the student-written parts.) All parts need to be typed or computer generated. (Electronically submitted applications will be accepted.) All applications are due Feb. 1, 2009. Winners will be announced by March 15, 2009, with the stipends awarded in time to pay for lessons starting April 1, 2009.

The first part of the application is a basic statement of need for a scholarship. What challenges already exist or are possibly on the horizon that might make it difficult for the student and/or his or her family to pay for lessons? The second part is a reflection by the student of the impact the instrument, the instruction/instructor or the study of music in general has positively affected his or her life. The third part, by the instructor, is an assessment of the student’s commitment to his or her instruction and the instrument in general.

It has been announced that after a five year run at Clinton State Lake Park the Wakarusa Music and Camping Festival is moving to Arkansas. Promoter Brett Mosiman charged that the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks apparently didn't like the "hippie" crowd that attended. He also charged that state and county law enforcement were heavy handed towards attendees. It is said 80% of the crowds of 10,000 to 16,000 people were from out of state. There will be a substantial loss of revenue, but apparently the Kansas government doesn't care about encouraging out of state tourist dollars being spent here.

Andy McKee will be performing live with Jarod Guth at the Classic Bean in the Fairlawn Plaza Development on December 20th at 7:30PM. He's back from the world tour. Check out andymckee.com
